COROS APEX 4: Back to Basics, But Brilliantly Better

Remember when GPS watches were… simpler? When the focus was on reliable data, marathon-level battery life, and getting you home safe after a long trail run? The COROS APEX 4 feels like a welcome throwback to that era, stripping away some of the excessive “smartwatch” features and doubling down on what really matters for serious athletes. After putting it through its paces, I’m convinced that COROS has found a sweet spot, blending a more streamlined experience with genuinely impressive core functionality.

GPS and HR Accuracy: Nail-on-the-Head Performance

This is where the APEX 4 truly shines. In a market saturated with GPS watches, accuracy is paramount. During my testing, the GPS consistently locked on quickly, even in challenging environments like wooded trails and urban canyons. The track was always consistent with the path I actually took.

The heart rate accuracy was equally impressive. Compared to a chest strap monitor, the APEX 4’s readings were remarkably close, with minimal lag or spikes during intense intervals. It provided reliable data for training zones. This is crucial for effectively pacing workouts and understanding your body’s response to exercise.

Beyond the Basics: Intelligent Stride Algorithm

COROS doesn’t just rely on raw GPS data. They’ve developed an “Intelligent Stride Algorithm” that learns your running style and adjusts the GPS readings accordingly. This results in even greater accuracy, particularly in situations where GPS signals might be weak or inconsistent. It’s subtle, but the difference is noticeable, especially over longer distances.

Maps and Battery: A Winning Combination

Forget constantly worrying about battery life or getting lost in the wilderness. The APEX 4 boasts phenomenal battery performance. I easily got over two weeks of regular training (including several long runs) on a single charge. This is a game-changer for ultra runners and anyone who dislikes the anxiety of constantly plugging in their watch.

The inclusion of offline maps is another standout feature. The maps are detailed and easy to navigate, allowing you to confidently explore new routes without relying on your phone’s data connection. The breadcrumb trail function is also a useful way to retrace your steps. Being able to download maps beforehand is a great benefit for those who spend a lot of time in areas with poor or no connectivity.

Map Navigation: Simple and Effective

Navigating with the APEX 4 is straightforward, using the digital crown to zoom in and out and scroll around the map. It’s not as visually stunning as some of the more detailed mapping systems on higher-end watches, but it’s incredibly functional. It allows for easy route import via the COROS app as well. The screen is clear enough to follow routes even in bright sunlight.

Display and UI: A Matter of Preference

This is where my feelings become more complex. The APEX 4’s display is functional, but it’s definitely not the brightest or most vibrant screen on the market. It’s perfectly legible outdoors, but indoors, the colors can appear somewhat muted. It relies on a memory-in-pixel display, which prioritizes battery life over visual fidelity.

The user interface is also relatively simple. The digital crown and single button allow for easy navigation, but the menu system can feel a little clunky at times. It’s functional, but it lacks the polish and intuitiveness of some other brands. This feels like the area where COROS made the biggest sacrifices in order to achieve that long battery life and competitive price point.

Simplicity vs. Sophistication

Ultimately, the APEX 4’s display and UI are a matter of personal preference. If you prioritize a visually stunning display and a seamless user experience, this watch might not be for you. However, if you value functionality, simplicity, and long battery life above all else, you might find that the APEX 4’s straightforward approach is a refreshing change of pace. It boils down to what you value most in a fitness watch.

The Verdict: A Reliable Companion for Serious Athletes

The COROS APEX 4 isn’t trying to be everything to everyone. It’s not a fancy smartwatch packed with features you’ll rarely use. Instead, it’s a focused, reliable fitness watch that excels at the essentials: accurate GPS and HR tracking, long battery life, and offline maps. It’s a solid choice for runners, cyclists, and other athletes who prioritize performance and reliability over bells and whistles. If you’re looking for a dependable training companion that won’t let you down on long runs or backcountry adventures, the APEX 4 is definitely worth considering. It successfully blends old-school reliability with new-age perks.
